Lima becomes the airline’s first destination with daily operations, while Caracas and Buenos Aires will reach five weekly frequencies starting in July
The Spanish airline is prioritizing its most profitable destinations and is temporarily suspending operations to Colombia due to the high operating costs in the Andean country
With this reorganization, Lima becomes the airline’s first destination to reach seven weekly flights, offering a daily connection between Madrid and the Peruvian capital. Likewise, Buenos Aires and Caracas will increase to five weekly frequencies starting next July.
The company is therefore strengthening connectivity between Spain and Latin America, “consolidating its commitment to those markets that offer greater value and growth potential.”
The current situation facing the aviation sector, marked by geopolitical tensions and an unprecedented increase in aviation fuel costs — which have doubled within a matter of weeks — is placing significant pressure on the profitability of certain air routes.
In this context, Plus Ultra has decided to temporarily suspend its operations in Colombia starting on June 2, as the broader industry crisis is compounded by country-specific factors that have “made the continuation of operations under current conditions unviable.” Among these factors are fuel prices significantly higher than in other countries in the region, a heavy tax and airport fee burden, increased structural operating costs, and the inability to pass rising fuel costs onto tickets that have already been issued. All of this has had a direct impact on the profitability of the route.
The network reorganization forms part of the measures adopted to strengthen Plus Ultra’s position in Latin America, prioritizing those routes where it can guarantee a more sustainable operation within an extraordinarily challenging global environment for air transport. Currently, Plus Ultra operates three weekly frequencies to Colombia: two to Bogotá and one to Cartagena de Indias.
According to the airline, the route reorganization
“will strengthen our position in strategic markets where we already have a consolidated operation, such as Lima and Caracas, while also reinforcing our commitment to Argentina by increasing capacity and frequencies in order to respond to demand with greater levels of efficiency. At a time of great uncertainty for the entire sector, our responsibility is to make decisions that guarantee the company’s long-term strength and efficiency.”
Peru: daily operations to Lima
Lima is becoming the company’s main destination in Latin America, reaching seven weekly frequencies and offering, for the first time, daily operations starting on July 14. This reinforcement will improve connectivity between both countries and respond to the strong demand between Spain and Peru.
Argentina: sustained growth in Buenos Aires
The Madrid–Buenos Aires route will continue progressively increasing its capacity until reaching five weekly frequencies starting on July 6, consolidating Plus Ultra’s commitment to the Argentine market.
Venezuela: five weekly frequencies to Caracas
The airline is also strengthening its operations to Venezuela, reaching five weekly frequencies between Madrid, Tenerife, and Caracas starting on July 15.
Commitment to passengers and travel agencies
The company has already begun implementing mechanisms to ensure a planned and coordinated transition, offering alternatives, refunds, or solutions in accordance with current regulations, while guaranteeing all commitments made to passengers and travel agencies.
